Metal theft

Householders and businesses are being warned to be on their guard after a dramatic rise in the volume of metal thefts with the number of thieves targeting metal such as lead, wrought iron, copper and brass on the increase.

Metal has become a key target for thieves as its worth has risen dramatically. It used to be churches which were the main target for lead thieves but now other metals are being snatched too, whether it is from offices, schools or even houses.

Owners of good quality garden furniture and statues, for instance, should put in place appropriate security measures to minimise the risk of theft and they should also consult their insurance broker to check that the items are adequately covered.

Iron railings, manhole covers, copper boilers and metal from rooftops are also on the list of items to keep an eye on. All of which are categories of metal which were not previously considered to be valuable, but which are now being snatched by thieves.

Care should be taken to ensure that such items are properly secured around your property. Along with identity fraud, metal theft has been one of the fastest growing crimes in the UK in recent years.
