Beware wind and solar power pitfalls

If you have wind turbines or solar panels installed to save on energy costs you must make sure that they are covered for any damage these might cause. With the recent high winds throughout the country, solar panels could be lifted by gales and take part of the roof with them.
Similarly, the blades on small wind turbines which are roof mounted or on land, could cause damage during gales, as they have been known to come away from the pole during high winds and can cause damage to not only the owner’s property, but also that of any neighbour.

With the recent boom in solar panels there have been instances where they are lifted by the wind and in the most serious case can actually take part of the roof with them. You must be aware of the implications if these energy saving devices cause damage. Also, it is important to let your insurance broker know if you have renewable energy methods installed so that you do not run the risk of a financially crippling repair bill.

Given the cost to install solar panels, it would be a huge shame if they are damaged by the weather and the original investment cannot be returned.

The situation can be avoided as long as property owners keep their insurance broker informed of any alterations or additions of this nature.
