The Lycetts Team Champion Award 2020

Lycetts are delighted to be continuing our support of the Lycetts Team Champion Award which celebrates the training yards that have a strong team ethos

Lycetts are delighted to be working with the National Trainers Federation for the third year running and are pleased to announce the winners of the Lycetts Team Champion Award 2020.

The Lycetts Team Champion Award celebrates and rewards racehorse training yards that develop a high performance team using the highest standards of employee management, including safe working practices. The accreditation system continues to grow in profile, allowing trainers to benchmark their business and use a trusted quality mark to attract staff, owners and sponsorship.

The winning trainers were Jonjo O’Neill for yards with over 40 horses and Dan Kubler for yards with less than 40 horses.

The short lists for the two categories were:

40+ horses Fewer than 40 horses
Roger Charlton Susan Corbett
William Haggas Dan Kubler
Jonjo O’Neill Richard Phillips
Bryan Smart Suzy Smith

The statistics for the number of horses in each yard are provided by Weatherbys and based on a rolling monthly average from 1st June 2019 to 3rd April 2020. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions at the time the awards ceremony was conducted by Zoom.

The judges were Yogi Breisner, Dana Mellor, Kevin Parsons and Laura Whyte. Before judging began, they each declared conflicts of interest and do not judge any yards with which they have a commercial, employment or personal interest.

Piers Plunket, divisional director at Lycetts, said: “I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Jonjo and Dan and their teams on their Lycetts Team Champion win.

“When we launched the Lycetts Team Champion award, our aim was to give much-deserved recognition to the training yards that strive every day to achieve the highest of industry standards. We know that these teams form the backbone of every yard and we wanted to shine a light on their dedication and continued commitment to helping the business – and the industry – thrive.

“In addition, we see the award as the perfect way of raising awareness of safe working practices to help reduce the risk of workplace injuries.

“The quality of entries continues to surpass our expectations, and we are delighted to see the progress made with each passing year.”
