Piers ‘did his time’ in racing, from breaking yearlings in Australia to working in the National Hunt and Flat racing world, before moving to the City and into bloodstock broking in Lloyd’s.
In 1998, Piers took a job in California, working for a Lloyd’s coverholder, to expand their general equestrian book to include the thoroughbred racing business.
He started the Thoroughbred Racing and Breeding Safety Association with the aim of controlling the spiralling cost of insurance on the racetrack. Today that program forms the base of a self funding mutual that is being replicated in many of the other racing States.
Apart from looking after a wide variety of diversified clients in the equestrian world, Piers concentrates on the ever challenging and volatile exposures associated with equestrian liability, both public and employers’, where risk prevention and claims management are crucial to managing escalating costs.
“I have spent most of my insurance career creating products and services that protect the practitioners from the inherent risks of horse ownership in a legal environment that is stacked against them.”
