Dedicated insurance for Sunshine Tour competitors launched

We are pleased to announce that we have worked with an insurer to launch a specialist policy for showjumpers competing at Spain’s and Portugal’s prestigious Andalucía Sunshine and Mediterranean Tours.

Held throughout the year at the Dehesa Montenmedio equestrian centre in Cádiz and Oliva equestrian centre in Valenecia, the Sunshine Tour is one of the world’s largest showjumping events, attracting more than 1,000 riders and 3,500 horses from around 50 countries.
This unique policy is specifically tailored to the unique risks faced by horses competing solely at the Sunshine tour.

Travelling horses abroad can pose an increase in the usual risks – from transport injuries to veterinary emergencies. The policy has been developed to fill that gap and provide peace of mind for UK competitors at one of the most challenging events on the international showjumping circuit.

Underwritten by a specialist sport horse insurer, the new policy provides stable-to-stable cover, following horses from their UK base through travel to Spain and back again.

Flexible durations of 30, 60 or 90 days reflect the varying length of stays at the Tour, offering a cost-effective alternative to full annual insurance during a high-risk period.

Key protections include £5,000 of surgical cover for specific conditions, increased to £7,500 for colic, and a 30-day extension clause for injuries or illnesses that manifest during the policy but prove fatal after the policy period. Together, these provisions offer reassurance that horses are protected not only during travel and competition, but also in the critical weeks immediately following.

International competitions also raise other exposures that need consideration when shipping horses abroad. These include individual travel and personal accident insurance for the owners, riders and grooms.
