Driving tests for tracked agricultural vehicles

September 12th 2016

Tracked agricultural vehicles are often being driven illegally by farmers who are unaware that they need to have taken a special test in order to drive one.

Tracked agricultural vehicles – which, like armoured military tanks, are propelled by a band of threads driven by two or more wheels – are increasingly popular additions to larger farm fleets.

However, farmers are not always aware that they need to pass a special test in order to gain a licence to drive a tracked vehicle, thereby laying themselves open to potentially significant financial losses in the event of an accident.

Rubber-tracked vehicles in particular are very popular because of the extra traction, horsepower and also weigh distribution. Drivers are required to pass what is called an H category driving test or they will not be eligible to take the vehicle onto a public highway.

If an operator is not licensed, their insurance could be invalid and potentially subject to large claims if there is an accident – and that’s in addition to the penalty points and fine they would inevitably incur.

The need to become licensed for tracked agricultural vehicles is easily overlooked. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the owner of the farm insurance policy to ensure that the H test is passed by any driver taking the vehicle on the road.

Those buying tracked agricultural vehicles should notify their insurance broker immediately who will explain the situation with the H test.
